Tech Tuesday: 2012 Olympics

Posted by Sloane Kelley on July 31, 2012

With the Olympics in full swing, this week's Tech Tuesday with WSAV focuses on ways to experience all things London 2012 on the go. The most notable app out there for fans of the Olympics is the NBC "Live Extra" app. It allows users to watch all of the Olympics events live as they're happening via tablet or mobile phone.

NBC may have come under fire for the way they've edited TV content but this is one way viewers can experience everything they want to see. For super fans of a particular sport, this has some definite relevance. No more missing any events.

Get the full story and video after the jump.

Stanley: The World’s First Socially Interactive Piano

Posted by Brian Brunskill on July 24, 2012

This past weekend at the Capitol Hill Block Party in Seattle, the best performer may not have been human. Created by Seattle creative agency Digital Kitchen, Stanley the piano performed song requests via Twitter all weekend long during the festival. Similar to the Tasty Tweets interactive smoothie creator, Stanley the piano's output and playlist are based on the tweets and data received over time. To request a song, people simply tweeted their song choice to @stanleypiano and if their song was selected, an automatic @reply would let them know their song is next. People at the festival were able to watch Stanley perform their requests live or those not physically present could watch via livestream.

Not only was Stanley developed with at least one song from each of the 100+ bands and DJ's performing at the festival, he also has the ability to learn new material to play. Rumor has it this piano added "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen to it's music library due to popular demand. Oh, the things you can build with a little imagination and an upcycled instrument from Craigslist.

Tech Tuesday: Just Landed

Posted by Hal Thomas on July 17, 2012

Today on WSAV Tech Tuesday, we talk about Just Landed, an iPhone app that promises to make picking someone up at the airport much easier.

How does Just Landed work?

Just Landed is very easy to use. All you have to do is enter the flight number you wish to track and Just Landed will tell you when you need to leave for the airport. You'll even get two reminders: the first one five minutes before you need to leave and the second one when it's time to leave.

How does Just Landed know when to tell you leave for the airport?

Just Landed monitors 3 things to calculate your drive time:

  • Your current location. Because the app uses the GPS from your phone, it doesn't matter where you are when you set up tracking for a flight. It knows where you are and adjusts accordingly.
  • Flight information from the airlines. If a flight is going to be early, late, or delayed, the app will send you a push notification with that information.
  • Current traffic conditions. If traffic is bad, the app will take extra drive time into account.
  • Is there anything you don't like about the app?

Right now, there's no way to look up a flight, so you do have to know the specific airline and flight number you wish to track. Other than that, I think it's a really solid app.

Where can we get it and how much does it...
