The Dutch Ministry of Finance recently put together a competition to design a new Euro coin to be used in the Netherlands.
The goal of the competition was to create a commemorative coin using the theme, “Netherlands and Architecture.” The winner of the competition was Dutch artist and architect Stani Michiels. His newly minted design for the coin will be a legal five Euro piece within the Netherlands.
The front side of the coin depicts an image of Queen Beatrix made up of a list of 109 names of prominent Dutch architects. The names are set in varying font weights and shades to create a portrait of the queen.
The reverse side of the coin features the value of the Euro along with a design of architecture texts made to look like a towering skyline. The spines of the books are positioned to create a map of The Netherlands in the center of the coin. The birds flying overhead are positioned over the capital cities of each province and each bird is a typical species found in that specific area.
The new coin is sure to become a keepsake and pride-piece among the Dutch. Click here to see Michiels’ design process.
