Add ‘Photolettering’ To Your Photo App Arsenal

Posted by Kristina DeVega on March 15, 2013

A new photo app called Photolettering from House Industries allows users to lay text over photos. It's a simple app that provides a number of stylish typefaces.

It's a great little photo app to keep in a Content Manager's back pocket for creating content on the go. One of my favorite features of the app is that text placement is easily controlled with finger gestures. You can also resize and rotate text with gesturing. My only complaints are the limited number of filters in the app and only three of their typefaces are free. The 24 paid typefaces can be purchased for $10 or you can buy them a la carte at $1 a piece. With that said, many of the typefaces are gorgeous and some are so fun they already write captions for themselves that it's probably worth the splurge.

It would make a nice addition to other photo-editing apps such as Camera + or Snapseed.

Nino: The Flexible Office System

Posted by Brian Brunskill on July 06, 2012

Nino-flexible-office-system

For those in the agency life, you know that no day is the same. You also know how dynamic the workplace has become since the digital revolution: one must be flexible, mobile and social to successfully perform. The "typical" day is no longer spent sitting at your desk. It's also not spent solely using a desktop computer.

The Nino Flexible Office System was developed during a 2-year research to improve person-to-person encounters, communication, and collaboration. This workstation can be set up to be either formal or informal (shown above.) The wheels on the bottom also enable it to be mobile - you can even work from the agency couch for a few hours. From your iPad to your morning coffee and stapler, this flexible furniture system has enough stands and compartments to hold all of the devices and materials you need.

It's inevitable that as technology advances so does the way we function in the workplace. Who knew the digital revolution would inspire a work space revolution?

Tasty Tweets: A Smoothie of Twitter Data

Posted by Brian Brunskill on June 22, 2012

Many of us share what we eat on social media, but imagine if what you eat is actually the result of what people share. Tasty Tweets was created by three creative designers from the Copenhagen Institute of Interactive Design.

Tasty Tweets collects Twitter mentions of specific words describing various fruits (blueberry, pineapple, apple or carrot) on Twitter and creates an edible smoothie representation of this. Twitter data so good you can taste it. As we all know, mentions and trends consistently change therefore no smoothie is identical.

Each smoothie's data is also represented graphically on a computer screen showing the proportions of flavors. Past smoothies can also be compared to one another via the historic view of trends over time. This is the most delicious data visualization we've seen yet.

Apps Coming to Life

Posted by Celby Richoux on May 10, 2012

Even though Facebook just shelled out a serious payday to Instagram, the development of a real-life Instagram camera looks like it's coming from an outside company called ADR Studio. The design and communication company has concepts to develop ‘Instagram Socialmatic,’ a flat touch screen camera with a built-in printer and 16GB of storage capacity. Specs on the size and shell are a perfect replica of the popular iPhone and (now) Android app.

What’s really awesome about this little gadget is the fact that it will have built in WiFi and Bluetooth, just like an iPad. Don’t want to print your pictures out? No problem, users can share their photos directly from the device.

Print outs from the camera will carry a QR code for viewers to scan and follow that user’s stream as well as an area where comments can be added. Additionally, the back of the photo will be equiped with a peelable stick surface, much like a post-it note for easy hanging. I can see my walls covered in these things already.

Considering the fact that we are all avid Instagrammers here at BFG, someone in the office will surely be one of the first to get their hands on this awesome design.

Story + Data + Design = Visualization

Posted by Celby Richoux on July 13, 2011

In a world where a thought is a Tweet and a conversation is a string of wall posts, it’s hard to imagine any other way of understanding information than visually. As a graphically obsessed individual, infographics have just always made sense to me. How often have you been in a meeting, a conversation, or educating yourself and thought how much a visual would help you better understand? For me and a world of designers, that thought bubble has popped up far too many times to not make a change in the way we learn. Words still have their meaning, but the image is what will bring the voice of that information into reality.

Visual.ly, a recently launched purveyor of infographics, detected this shift and sought a means to collect the golden age of data into a comprehensive library that not only enables designers to display their portfolios but for any digital passerby to delve into the visual sea of information.

From The Work We Do To Pay Taxes to Missions To Mars, as “the world's largest community for exploring, sharing, creating, and promoting data visualizations,” Visual.ly is at the forefront of the information wave of the future.
