Tech Tuesday: Gardening Goes Digital

Posted by Sloane Kelley on March 27, 2012

While backyard and even back patio gardening has been trendy for awhile, there hasn't been much out there to support the hobby digitally. That's starting to shift with more mobile tools becoming available for smartphones and tablets.

In this week's Tech Tuesday with WSAV, I cut through some of the app store clutter and zeroed in on a few helpful gardening applications. GardenMinder is a relatively new app that allows for garden planning, reminders sent as push notifications, and tips. We also talked through The Garden Guide, a free app chock full of information on growing and harvesting. Check out all the details in the video below.

Tech Tuesday: Shopping Gets Gamified

Posted by Sloane Kelley on December 13, 2011

The location battles continue and this time the player has some gamified moves that pertain to shopping. Meet CheckPoints, a mobile app that turns shopping into a game, complete of course with rewards.

On this week's Tech Tuesday with WSAV, I walked Kim Gusby through CheckPoints. It's a pretty simple app to use: go to a store, scan the barcode on products, earn points, and ultimately unlock rewards. There's an upside for brands as well. As users scan the barcode on brand X's product, they're considering purchase and in all likelihood more apt to buy at that point.

Savannah, It’s Time To Go On A GoldRun

Posted by Sloane Kelley on September 06, 2011

This Thursday night, cities across the world will be celebrating all things style related with Fashion's Night Out. Savannah is among the cities taking part and will have something to intrigue both the fashionistas and technophiles out there.

GoldRun, an iPhone app that brings augmented reality and location together, will be on full display.

Download the free app to take part in an interactive scavenger hunt that will kick off at the Creative Coast office and continue throughout downtown Savannah shops. Once inside a location, use the app to find an object or clue that will ultimately lead you to the next stop on the run. Each "found object" can be captured as a photo and shared to other social networks. So be ready to pose with your newly found friend or accessory at each stop along the way. Also be ready to compete for prizes.

This will be a great chance for the Savannah area to test out GoldRun in advance of Geekend. GoldRun's founder, Vivian Rosenthal, is one of Geekend's keynote speakers in November.

For more on GoldRun, check out this week's installment of TechTuesday with WSAV.

If you're planning to take part on Thursday, here is what you'll need to know.

What: GoldRun At Fashion's Night Out Savannah
Where: Downtown Savannah. Begins at the Creative Coast,
