Tech Tuesday: PinPointing from Zappos

Posted by Hal Thomas on October 16, 2012

The holiday shopping season will soon be upon us and it's never too early to start gathering gift ideas for your friends and loved ones. Today on WSAV Tech Tuesday, we discuss a recently launched service from Zappos called PinPointing that makes gift recommendations based on the things people have pinned on Pinterest.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  1. Go to PinPointing.apps.zappos.com.
  2. Enter the Pinterest username of the person you wish to buy for.
  3. Zappos will analyze the things that person has pinned and give you a list of related items that it thinks are similar.

If the person you're trying to buy for isn't on Pinterest you can explore recommendations from featured pinners, many of whom are stylists, designers, and celebrities.

WHAT MAKES PINPOINTING SO GREAT?

In my opinion, the best gifts are often the ones that you don't specifically ask for. Someone knows you well enough to understand the kinds of things that you like and they surprise you with something that shows they put a lot of thought and care into the gift. PinPointing isn't going magically make that happen, but it seems like a great place to start because it uses things that people have already said that they like to makes its recommendations.
